What is Pastafarism
Pastafarianism (also called the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster) is a satirical religion that began in 2005 as a protest against teaching intelligent design in schools. Its followers, known as Pastafarians, humorously worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) — a deity made of spaghetti and meatballs — to highlight the absurdity of mixing religion with science education. Despite its humorous nature, Pastafarianism promotes real values such as critical thinking, tolerance, and the separation of church and state.

Pastafarian dress often includes a colander (a pasta strainer) worn on the head, which they call their “religious headgear.” Some followers wear pirate costumes because they believe pirates are the original Pastafarians and that the decline in pirates has caused global warming (a playful joke within the faith). During official ceremonies or ID photos, some Pastafarians have even been allowed to wear their colanders as an expression of their religious beliefs.
